2012 TMNT Metalhead Review

I’VE FOUND THEM. Yes, I’ve found the latest figures in Playmates 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line, Metalhead, Dogpound, and Fishface at a Walmart in central Indiana.  Metalhead has probably been the fan’s most wanted figure since the prototype was shown this past year at NY ToyFair, and he’s a good one.

Starting with Metalhead’s head, it’s on a ball-joint, and actually seems to have a little more movement than the regular 4 Turtles.  I was just expecting a swivel to be honest; real pleased with this.

The shoulders and arms are probably the worst part about this figure unfortunately.  The shoulders are on a swivel-joint only, and the shell gets protrudes in the way when if you try to move the arms backwards past the lateral position.  There isn’t any articulation in the elbows at all, which is a big bummer, and the missile plugs into the right hand.  It’s pointless accessory.  Doesn’t even fire.  Stupid.  Wrist Swivels.  Oh the wrist swivels.  They really save the arms from being complete shit, and making them doable.

Metalhead’s torso looks fantastic, and the yellow really pops all around the figure.  The back of the shell is also pretty neat, seeing as how it’s a NYC manhole cover.  Height wise, Metalhead is just a hair shorter than Mikey.

I am really shocked at the amount of lower body articulation in Metalhead.  The hips are fantastic and actually seem to have a little more movement than the 4 Turtles due to the front of the shell not obstructing forward movement.  Knee articulation is stellar, and again seems to be a little more prevalent than the 4 Turtles.  Metalhead’s also got an ankle swivel, and while it’s not a huge deal, it is nice to see Playmates is paying attention to some details, even though they’re missing on some of the other points of articulation.

Overall, Metalhead is definitely a figure every TMNT fans needs to own, and for only $8-$9 (take note, Hasbro), you better believe you need to get this.  Sure, there are some faults with some lack of articulation, but the rest of the figure is very redeeming.  Plus, Metalhead’s just a badass character.  A robotic Turtle?  Can’t wait to see him in the show!
